Spotlight Series: Meet JESI STRACHAM

MEET JESI STRACHAM (NC), Spinal Cord Injury survivor and president of the Wheel with Me Foundation.  Jesi has recently been nominated for the 2022 Ambassadorship Award for IPHA's Phoenix Advocacy Program.  Her remarkable public work and her spirited style in educating and inspiring others to rise above their physical impairments is a global asset to lead the pursuit of personal excellence and achievements.  In addition, Jesi is the recent advocacy partner of the IPHA program: Women's Health Network- focused on all women's health disorders and complex issues.

Jesi Stracham is an adaptive athlete, public figure, and advocate for the wheelchair community. Since 2015, she has made it her life’s mission to touch as many hearts as possible, inspiring others to live their lives to the absolute fullest - despite their obstacles.

Jesi has tried her hand at multiple adaptive sports, but found an outlet for her competitive drive alongside the abled-bodied, participating in the Tough Mudder series. In 2017, she received her “Holy Grail” which involves competing in the demanding, 24-hour World’s Toughest Mudder. Using a team of support runners, she has shown the world that when just a few people come together, anything is possible.

While the Tough Mudder series satiated her desire for adrenaline and excitement, Jesi found her niche on the ice - and was a member of the US Paralympic developmental curling team. As the last place she thought she would find her passion, this is was the sport to which she devoted the majority of her efforts. Jesi left the program in February 2020 to focus on finishing her associates degree, personal training certificate, and building her fitness business. When her need for adrenaline and excitement rises, Jesi competes on the Tough Mudder Course.

Competitive endeavors aside, Jesi’s most important role is as the co-founder of her non-profit, the Wheel With Me Foundation. Founded in 2016,The Wheel With Me Foundation is focused on a growing community of men and women who are wheelchair users. The organization's mission is to bridge the gap between inpatient rehabilitation and independent living through activism with the ultimate goal of constructing a transitional home to bridge the gap between inpatient rehabilitation and the real world. The residents of the Wheel With Me Campus will be accompanied by a caring staff member ready to coach them through their journey. Each resident will learn wheelchair skills, how to address and overcome daily obstacles, and care for themselves while fostering their own personal development. Upon graduation, the resident will be confident reintegrating into their home, community, and workplace.    Ref: https://jesistracham.com/

My Biggest Hero is… By: Jesi Stracham

In an interview, Matthew McConaughey said his biggest hero is him ten years from now. This resonates with me. When I think of a hero in my life, I automatically think of the person I am and the person I am continuously developing into. To me, a hero is someone who shows courageous strength, even when the future is uncertain. A person who values the impact they leave on the individuals they serve. A hero is a person who, regardless of their fears or the doubt in their success, shows up anyway. An individual that continuously exhibits mental grit is a hero. Heroes are all around us.  Had you asked me this question 6 years ago, I’m sure my answer would NOT be the same. After the accident that left me a paraplegic, my once determined future became unclear in an instant.

I struggled to change my lifestyle to accommodate my disability. I lost not only the use of my legs but my bowel and bladder control as well as the perceived “control” I had over my life. I had to relearn everything I previously knew about day to day functions. Various examples of everyday tasks I had to remaster were how to get my pants on, use a catheter to pee, how to poop, how to shower, get in and out of bed or a car, and how to use a wheelchair. Refusing to accept the reality of my life-changing injury, I overlooked my physical and mental health and wellness.  (see complete Blog entry)  (see Jesi's complete Blog entry)

Special Thanks
A very special thanks to PHIL MUCCIO and JOSH SCHUELLER of AXIOBIONICS for their tremendous support for all people with physical disabilities, and their innovative approach to rehabilitation and pain management.  Ms. Jesi Stracham is a staunch supporter of the advantages of Axiobionics innovations and the Integrative Pain Healers Alliance recognizes their approach to physical therapy support.

EDITORIAL: MEDICAL NEWS AUTO-CENSORED BY YOUTUBE (SILENCING OUR HEALTH EDUCATORS)

4/16/2022 - An unfortunate alert to the awareness community is about a new pandemic in the war for public (free) speech of educators and health advocates.  This infection of conservative tyranny is a growing disruption by video hosts and search engines like YOUTUBE.  The CANCEL CULTURE through its AUTOMATED (AI DRIVEN) AUDITORS of our content is now scanning all uploads, searching for what it feels to be a violation of community guidelines- auto-judging our medical content as NUDITY OR SEXUAL CONTENT.

The Women's Diagnostic Network is a professional group of educators and clinical researchers united to collaborate, share resources and publish viewpoints and helpful information about women's health disorders.  Its members publish the most concerning topics  of our day for public awareness, including breast cancer, heart disease, pelvic floor issues such as urinary incontinence and endometriosis. As medical educators and wellness advocates of all health solutions, the publishers use the many valuable resources of social media to 'get the word out' and promote personal research. But when hosts like YOUTUBE's auto judge STRIKES your account, criticizing your content as PORNOGRAPHIC without as much as reviewing the entire video, this is truly a step backward in the world of education.

In this specific case, IMAGES were blatantly omitted (physically removed) from our video file.  In other cases, whole videos just disappeared or were 'temporarily' shut down + accounts were threatened - all because of images or footage that may appear to show suggestive anatomical parts in the name of medical presentation.

These judges may be the same people who find biology textbooks pornographic.  Our videos and articles are by no means showing ANY SEXUAL CONTENT, unless of course YOUTUBE is run by such puritanical ultra-conservatives.  If you look at the examples of what they deemed suggestive, a doctor's hand holding a patient's and a woman getting acupuncture treatment.

REALLY??

YOU BE THE JUDGE!

Please email your comments to: editor.prevention101@gmail.com or leave your comment below. (We may publish this in our viewpoints as part of a new case we wish to build against Google- the proud owners of YouTube).

Injured Veterans Program Receives Advanced Therapeutic Device Aid from PEMF Association

Mountlake Terrace, WA – March 19, 2022 - The Association of PEMF Professionals (AOPP) recently forged a supportive alliance with the Xtreme Couture G.I. Foundation by donating an undisclosed number of PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency) devices to help wounded veterans of America's armed forces suffering from a range of post-service injuries.

AOPP directors and clinical advisors have enacted a 2021 initiative to identify an expanding list of military service injuries that PEMF has been documented to addressing.  From chronic pain and musculoskeletal issues to head injuries and PTSD, therapists specializing in the use of PEMF worldwide have confirmed positive results of this technology as a helpful support to affected veterans. AOPP medical diagnostic advisor and military veteran Dr. Robert L. Bard promotes this campaign based on his service experience as well as his 35+ years in practice. "There is no shortage of need for  health resources for our active and retired service men and women. The severity of physiological and mental trauma that most of them undergo in just one or two tours can be so devastating... especially when trying to rejoin civilian life."

The AOPP was founded on the need for public education, therapeutic awareness, professional collaboration and credibility to the international PEMF community.  The group recognizes the science  and potential health benefits of PEMF for our many injured military veterans, that Executive Director Dr. Jerry Dreessen found it fitting to initiate an outreach to offer the technology help "veterans with  special and complex needs."

In March of 2021, the Association of PEMF Professionals launched their PTSD for Vets Program, designed to connect PEMF manufacturers and distributors to non-profit organizations and donate PEMF devices to help launch the pilot program. Having successfully used PEMF in his chiropractic practice, Dr. Dreessen connected with his long-time schoolmate, Randy Couture, who runs the Xtreme Couture G.I. Foundation, which is dedicated to helping military vets. The AOPP was able to create a strategic alliance with the foundation, starting with their NW Chapter in Washington state, run by Pat Crosby, and launched the pilot program.

“Our primary goal is to reduce the symptoms of PTSD and the devastating effects it can have on our military vets. I found that using a space that was already set up where they can get free care, and using my connections as the Executive Director, made the whole thing happen in a very short period of time, without a ton of paperwork and red tape. We were grateful to have MagnaWave, a PEMF distributor located in Louisville, KY donate 3 machines to help us with the program. When I contacted Pat Ziemer, the owner of MagnaWave, he didn't hesitate to help us."

The Xtreme Couture GI Foundation works directly with companies that share the same goals of helping our nation’s military families. They also fund transition consultation services for veterans approved through an online application process who have been affected by PTSD, traumatic illness, downsizing, lay-offs, lateral moves and relocations.

There are many great outcomes for certain health issues using PEMF therapy. Unlike electrical stimulation devices, PEMF devices send nano pulses of specially calibrated magnetic fields, most commonly the one that mimics earth's natural magnetic field, which is 7.83 Hz. Since the device’s attachments don't need to be applied with gel, or adhered to the area to be treated, those under care can sit comfortably in a chair no need to gown up. The only limitations for treatment are electronic devices such as pacemakers, cochlear implants, TENS unit implants and insulin implants to name a few.

Another property of PEMF is the ability to travel through bone to help speed up the healing of fractures and sprains and strains. These pulses have been shown to reduce inflammation and increase blood flow and blood oxygenation. PEMF  is a perfect technology for healing tissue naturally. PEMF therapy is showing favorable results with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and has been FDA approved to treat bladder incontinence and bone fractures.

In other countries, PEMF has been a mainstream therapy for over 30 years. There have been over 2800 clinical trials completed using many different PEMF devices in many different countries, all with positive results

MOMS & DOCS: A COALITION FOR CHANGE IN PEDIATRIC MYOCARDITIS DETECTION

2/11/2022- The Angiofoundation and Integrative Pain Healers Alliance (comprised of physicians, researchers and public educators) and the For Elysa Foundation, a non-profit advocacy group supporting pediatric myocarditis research- united in their first multi-org summit to test drive a coalition concept to unite all advocacy groups for "a common and louder voice for change!"

The "spark" of the coalition originally came from two “Doctor Moms”- Dr. Noelle Cutter and Dr. Roberta Kline as part of a research assignment on genomic science and Long Haul (post Covid infection) disorders.  Published reports of myocarditis since the early 1900’s about a “sudden heart failure” showed new headlines during the pandemic, drawing a spotlight on the rare viral-driven cardiac disease. Their search led to the For Elysa Foundation, a foundation dedicated to Elysa Rojas (2) who passed away from Viral Myocarditis in January, 2013.

Aptly called "Project: Mommies on a Mission", the name and group design was inspired by For Elysa Foundation founder Mrs. Jana Rojas’ who describes her fellow advocates thusly.  Her foundation was built to promote "improved Education, providing Light and promoting Research to help physicians and families prevent another tragic death from sudden cardiac arrest and viral myocarditis."  IPHA immediately connected with Mrs. Rojas to brainstorm, then build what is now "PROJECT 1"- a two part initiative to offer a supportive arm to their fight against children's cardiac conditions and a united front to advance the role of the medical community.

The IPHA coalition concept and outreach offers vocal support to the many parent groups fundraising on research for their respective focus disorders.  Through info sharing, resource access and expanded networking, the blueprint is comprised of uniting the medical and patient communities to work on more effective protocols. Recognized IPHA research director and cancer diagnostic specialist Dr. Robert Bard (NYC), the clinical alliance staged their plan to bring advocacy to physicians in the form of research and education for improved detection and monitoring solutions from the global imaging society.  "Where parent communities fall short of getting the attention of medical leaders, we as MD's offer some new advantages like conferences, symposiums and our private networks... as parents ourselves, and we want to lend a hand in recruiting all docs to support "the better way" like smarter exam strategies and use of non-invasive imaging in sick visits as part of a major step toward saving more lives from this insidious disease"

"The tricky thing with myocarditis being virally mediated is that Elysa could have had a heart scan a week before she died (the day before she contracted the virus that wrecked her heart), and it would have been normal", stated Mrs. Rojas who emphasized her thoughts on the efficient use of diagnostic imaging is during a sick visit, where any other time prior may not prove conclusive as a screening paradigm.

The success of the first meeting gave promise to a national outreach, bringing parents and physicians together - where community discussions are the ideal step in problem solving.  “After just this one exchange, we all agreed that major CHANGE needs to happen from the diagnostic area… we need to develop quantifiable and effective early detection methods .  Also, we need to communicate with all ED’s and ICU responders to recognize the urgency of cardiac imaging for patients viral infection- and make that part of a standard exam for pediatric myocardial inflammation”, stated Dr. Cutter.

In a recent interview with NYCRA NEWS, Dr. Bobbi Kline expanded on the initiatives of this project; "one recent hurdle to overcome within our outreach to the medical community appears to come from the current headlines about the rare possibility of myocarditis that may be linked to the vaccine. While just the mention of the vaccine seems to spark political division and conflict, this issue is much broader and our focus is in helping the children, not the politics."

A Word from Doctor Mom #1

Meet Dr. Bobbi Kline, one of Project: Mommies on a Mission's top advisors and creators.

"As a mom, my heart grieves for parents, including Elysa’s, who suffer such devastating tragedy. It’s the worst thing you hope never happens to your child, and I truly admire parents who turn a tragedy into something positive. It requires such amazing strength, courage and grace. As a physician, I find my self immediately asking "Why do these things happen? How can we predict or prevent them?" As clinicians, we look for patterns to help guide diagnosis and treatment. We know what to expect, but sometimes they can lull us into a false sense of security. Childhood viruses, as any parent knows, are an expected part of those early years."

News Release: 2022 Research Trial- Dense Breast Detection

NY Cancer Alliance to Launch the First Dense Breast Research Study for Low BMI and Underserved Subjects

1/11/2022- Dr. Noelle Cutter (Biology professor and clinical researcher from Molloy College) joined with Dr. Robert L. Bard (top NYC radiologist and cancer diagnostic expert) to deploy the 2022 field study to provide breast screening to younger women, subjects with LOW BMI and those in underserved areas. "Through supplemental imaging (ie. 3D Doppler Ultrasound), we can provide better detection of tumors in dense breasts that are concealed by dense breast tissue from mammography."

Mammography is the current standard for breast cancer early detection for women 40 & older. Recent studies have shown nearly half of all women who get mammograms are found to have dense breasts, exposing this population to the risk that mammograms may miss potentially cancerous tumors concealed by dense breast tissue.  Dr. Cutter's initial concepts to target LOW BMI (bet 12-22% body fat) was personally inspired.  As an active TRIATHLETE, her own diagnosis sparked her survey and inquiry throughout the athletic community where she uncovered a significant trend that became the basis for this research. She wishes to target younger women, athletes and members of underserved communities. "Younger women may be more likely to have dense breasts... also I find athletes with LOWER BMI (body mass index) or those with  less body fat are more likely to have more dense breast tissue compared with women who are obese."

Breast density is shown to be associated with breast cancer risk in women aged 40 to 65 years, but there is limited evidence thus far of its association with risk of breast cancer among women 18+ (mostly because mammography starts at 35 or 40). Furthermore, a high proportion of women with low BMI present with dense breasts, making them likely candidates to receive false negative readings on a mammogram.  "We aimed to estimate the proportion of breast cancers attributable to breast cancer risk factors commonly documented in clinical practice and used in breast cancer risk prediction models, including BI-RADS breast density and ultrasounds to confirm mammography readings", states Dr. Bard.

Thanks to the digital (Web-shareable) platform of ultrasound, collaborating between multiple scanning locations allows all data to be collected and interpreted by Dr. Bard in his NYC clinical facility. "This allows us to have more scanning partners throughout the state and hopefully even across the country", says Joe Cappello, national patient advocate of AreYouDense.org.

The national expansion program of this screening pilot and remote-location training are supported by an expanding list of clinical and technological leaders in diagnostic imaging. "We are honored to join this research and educational crusade to save lives... where Ultrasound Imaging can perform such a vital role in uncovering so many cancer concerns more efficiently", states Alice Chiang, CEO or Terason Inc. The coordinated research team aspires to collect enough data from these demographic target groups (18+, low bmi and underserved women) to support the emphasis of dense breast concerns in our cancer detection community and the importance of supplemental scanning for all early detection facilities.

JOINING THE TEAM TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

As an athlete and medical professional in the field of Physical Therapy, being able to keep as many athletes healthy across the lifespan as possible has always been a major passion of mine. For those women within the endurance athlete community who may have denser breasts could greatly benefit from a well-designed approach to more accurately detect and diagnose the presence of breast cancer. This is especially true for those who are younger than the age of 40 who may already have breast cancer related changes but have never received an appropriate mammogram as well as those over 40 who have received false negatives because of dense breast tissue concealing the breast tumor on mammogram. The use of ultrasound imaging in accordance with mammographic study conducted in our study with Dr. Bard and Dr Cutter, I believe, will be a great asset to the women of Long Island to better detect and help them receive early treatment should breast cancer be present. I am honored to be included in this study to not only help the women of Long Island and abroad within the endurance athlete community but also those in underserved communities to ensure they get to continue to do the things they love with those they love most.
