The NY Cancer Resource Alliance was founded shortly after 9/11 (2001) as a unifying conduit between all advocates and advocacy groups. The group's core members are partner-volunteers whose assets are self-funded and driven by a common goal of supporting all cancer advocates through research, clinical services or educational efforts. Under the common spirit of collaboration and brainstorming, NYCRA actively connects with all community leaders to offer collected resources to cancer patients, survivors and all those seeking current information about cancer care.
This year, NYCRA "hits the national stage" by connecting with all cancer orgs, specifically women-related cancers as part of their latest collective plan to join hands and mobilize advocacy functions. The NYCRA website brandishes the motto: "Only Together Can We Truly Grow"- a statement gifted to the once startup group by a role model in breast cancer advocacy, Mrs. Jennifer Hunt (and a fundraiser for the now defunct LI2DAY). This philosophy rings true even more with this new outreach program.
“JOINING HANDS” WITH FELLOW CAREGIVERS Mr. Joe Cappello, executive founder of the "Are You Dense?" Foundation aligned with NYCRA director Dr. Lennard Gettz to initiate this nationwide outreach effort to all cancer organizations to form a collective resource for all cancer survivors, patients and their families. Additional support of this program comes from top members of the Women's Diagnostic Network (an IPHA branch) Dr. Roberta Kline and Dr. Noelle Cutter- who themselves forged an alliance with a growing list of health professionals and cancer advocacy groups.
8/4 - This first meeting of the minds was co-hosted by Mr. Cappello who coordinated with leaders from GILDA'S CLUB WESTCHESTER, a community organization for people with cancer, their families and friends. Founded and inspired by the late Gilda Radner and Gene Wilder, the org's local chapters provide meeting places where those who have cancer, their families, and friends can join with others to build emotional and social support as a supplement to medical care. Gilda's Club Executive Director Jennifer Scully and Dir. of Development Deborah August were the guests of honor, with clinical guest, Dr. Robert Bard (cancer diagnostic specialist from NYC) and moderated by Lennard Gettz. This special assembly of cancer advocates and clinical leaders proved to be an ideal collaborative group, sharing and exploring ideas under the spirit of finding new solutions in the name of awareness and research support. "We look forward to partnering with the NYCRA and Are You Dense Foundation. This relationship has tremendous potential to further our reach, providing resources, education and support to so many individuals impacted by cancer,” stated Ms. Scully.
Planning this program was originally earmarked for the spring of 2019. As with most get-togethers, the Covid-19 Pandemic pushed the timetable to dates with (hopefully) reduced and safer surge rates, until eventually, the trend of virtual video conferencing became the ultimate solution for immediate programming. "As the battle against cancer continues, I am proud to see the spirit of foundations and medical crusaders like Dr. Bard maintain their momentum as far as their respective commitments", says Dr. Cutter. "We're actually seeing a major uptick in educational programs, grant-funded research and innovative resources from the public sector, and thanks to digital conferencing, sharing solutions has become a borderless opportunity!"
MEETING ON FAMILIAR GROUND Several connective elements that brought these groups together included an editorial project published in the Fall 2021 issue by NYCRA NEWS called "UNDERDIAGNOSED WOMEN". This feature spotlighted Gilda Radner's story, thanks largely to her niece, Meryl Goldsmith- who incidentally is the executive producer of the documentary film "Love, Gilda". Mr. Cappello supported the production of this project and contributed the story of his late wife, Nancy Cappello as another example of being underdiagnosed. Nancy died of treatment complications from late stage breast cancer un-detected by mammography due to the concealment of dense breast tissue.A prominent name in cancer care turned out to be a familiar common ground to everyone in the room. DR. BARRY BOYD, a medical oncologist with the Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center in Greenwich was the managing oncologist for both Gilda Radner and Nancy Cappello. He was also awarded the 2022 Gilda's Club inaugural Spirit of Excellence in Oncology Award. In addition, Dr. Boyd has been a respected educational resource for NYCRA and a clinical colleague of Dr. Bard.
As the first of many, the format of this virtual connection proved highly promising for building bridges between groups, exploring project collaboration and sharing resources. Dr. Bard drove his concept of expanding cancer education in all advocacy groups with a "PRO-SUMER" approach to cancer education. With a massive clinical network, he offered recruiting more medical experts to contribute as speakers or publishers of current information direct from the field. "Sharing access to cancer specialists, people can (finally) learn about the latest technologies and modalities not usually available to them from their general physician or a standard Google search", says Dr. Bard. "Together, we can help build up that educational piece to empower members of cancer organizations like Gilda's Club Westchester with easier access to this level of resource to help the many recently diagnosed."
For over 30 years, Dr. Bard remains majorly active in support of all cancer support groups. He has presented in countless medical seminars and recently published a massive catalog of his updated educational articles and online videos about cancer care related topics. Through this meeting, Dr. Bard generously offered GILDA'S CLUB WESTCHESTER complete and unlimited access to the re-use of his entire educational library of work (see MedicalScanNews).
"On occasion, we would try to connect with other groups but for whatever reason, this year seems to be a connective year for us all. Perhaps it's the unique effect of the ZOOM platform-- it seems ideal for collaboration and 'face-time' discussions, paving more synergistic relationships from just about anywhere and anytime. Unlike all the limitations and pressures of the pre-covid style meetings (of driving to someone's conference room)... that was for the birds! I have several dozen organizations scheduled this month and removing all the stress of physical meetings allow us all to be our better selves", says Joe Cappello.
Since the Covid-19 Pandemic, NYCRA'S VIRTUAL NETWORK known as 'POWERMEETS' has supported various types of online conferences, educational courses and interactive webinars with attendees and panel speakers from across the U.S. The national collaborative outreach piloted by Joe Cappello, Dr. Noelle Cutter and friends- aims to unite leaders to share resources and co-promote public events and activities to any and all cancer-related initiatives throughout underserved communities.
2022 TRIBUTE TO A GLOBAL CRUSADER

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY Written by: "PT JOSH" Schueller | Edited by: Roberta Kline, MD
As a physical therapist, an initial sense of despondency or loss of emotional will is not uncommon with sufferers of major injuries. Some may devolve into an existential downturn which affects the ambition to stand, walk or reach for more out of life. It is human nature for people to face additional challenges in staying motivated and inspired during times of adversity. Those who succumb to the loss of physical abilities may find it easier to stay behind closed doors and detach themselves from interaction to the world at large.
Meanwhile, finding that pivotal inspiration to regenerate from that depletion of hope (perhaps by a social cause, a person or an event) can be the game-changing spark for sufferers of any handicap. Empowering people in their daily lives can steer the very direction of anyone's success. Whether you're a father, a physical therapist, or an advocate for spinal cord injury, being able to show people that they can overcome their challenges and adversity in their daily lives, (whether it's pain or disabilities) is a worthwhile achievement.
We may identify competition as "US against THEM", but a more sustainable and prominent form of competition is the internal one that drives us all. To self-motivate is to raise your life to that next level. Impacting your internal drive enables you to aspire for external competition, such that participating in competition at Jesi Stracham's level is this form of personal expansion.
Jesi's inspirational website and her social media channels help captivate and support a growing number of followers for her presence and her drive to go beyond disabilities and to capture that internal power of self-ownership. She harnesses it to compete for the sake of achieving great results- forging her public message into a crusade to support anyone affected by physical challenge. As a motivational speaker, Jesi exudes wisdom beyond her years, harnessing self-empowerment and insight that translates to a healthy lifestyle for anyone.
MEDICAL HOPE FROM A SECOND OPINION When Jesi was originally diagnosed with a spinal cord injury, she received an Asia-A grade. This means complete motor and sensory loss. Over time, Jesi recovered and rehabbed from her injury and began to acquire sensation below her level of injury. She started to move her legs in her hip flexors. She could feel touch below her knee, and she began to get some return in her pelvic floor function. All of this would not be possible with a classification of an Asia-A.
The majority of spinal cord injuries are a contusion to the spinal cord that causes damage at the time of injury. But the final chapter is not written on recovery whether 1 month, 1 year or 7 years after your injury. In Jesi's case, her recovery drove her to push for living independently, and reach for a higher set of goals for herself. The scans that Jesi undertook at Dr. Bard's office in NYC added to this hope as they showed that her nerves actually have life to them. This became an added sign of HOPE that they can continue to recover from this injury.
Nobody knows how much damage is truly done to that spinal cord. But as with Jesi (and other powerhouses like her), if you are driven to explore and push to find more answers, fueling HOPE with empowered vision can uncover solutions to even the toughest disorders.
"Jesi Wheels to Manhattan": Biometric Case Study with Advanced Ultrasound Scans (feat. Dr. Robert Bard)
JESI STRAHAM is a trauma survivor on a mission to help individuals see the opportunity in their obstacles. In January of 2015, Jesi was the passenger on a motorcycle when it collided with a car. She woke up a week later in an intensive care unit without the use of her legs secondary to a spinal cord injury. Instead of accepting disability as her reality, Jesi's spirit to overcome her struggles made her one of the country's top advocates for wellness, empowerment and improved lifestyle for all traumatic injury victims and wheelchair-bound individuals. She shares new resources and health solutions as the director of Wheel With Me Foundation.
On July 1, 2022, Jesi takes to the road from her North Carolina home all the way to New York City to visit a Linkedin connection from the medical front. Dr. Robert Bard is a renowned clinical imaging specialist focused on cancers and chronic disorders. He specializes in the advanced use of Doppler Blood Flow Ultrasound to identify some of the most challenging issues and anomalies. Jesi, alongside her caring friends in Physical Therapy and Axiobionics (wearable therapeutics) introduced her to Dr. Bard several months prior- and together, they designed a complete diagnostic case study around the many physical aftermaths from Jesi's spinal cord injuries.
TRANSCRIPT (By Jesi) We are here in New York City at Dr. Bard's office where I just had the most intense diagnosis I've ever had in my entire life. He scanned everything from my legs, my hips, shoulders, bladder, pelvic floor, spine, spinal cord. We saw it all today and I'm excited to be in good health and to see how my body will improve. The thing I really enjoyed about ultrasound was how in-depth you could see different parts of the body's organs, whereas an x-ray is just a 2D still image. The ultrasound allows you to see all the way around. So for example, he could see the damage on my hip from when I was a kid and I dislocated it.
We started with my knee and went up my leg to my hip, where I had some idea of why I have so much hip pain. I have an old fracture in my hip that I didn't realize I had. I thought I had just dislocated it as a kid, turns out there's there was an old field fracture there. And so that could be the reason that I'm having nerve pain there. I also got to see my spine through my stomach. I saw my bladder and my abdomen. We looked at my shoulder and seen my shoulder health. So it was really cool to see that the deeper part of my shoulder to see the muscles, to see if they're worn down, if they need to be built up, if I need to do PT. And it's remarkable to get a more in depth description about what's going on with your body as an individual with a spinal cord injury; I often get spasms and they are typically below my level of injury, which is T4.
Around the middle of my chest, I'd get spasms through my core and into my legs. I've been using Axiobionics wearable therapy for seven and a half years to help combat the spasms. And the only time that it doesn't help them is when I'm on my cycle. Uh, that is when I notice increased spasticity or if my toes are curled in my shoe or if something's wrong. Uh, so the spasm is essentially when the muscle contracts itself and the way that I experience them is my core completely contracts. And my legs shoot out straight into like a plank position and shake. They are a little bit painful and frustrating because they throw you over and throw you around in your chair and it makes life a little bit difficult. So I have been using electric stimulation when I sleep to help combat the hardest part about having a spinal cord injury is the bladder incontinence.
Now I'm worrying about when is my bladder going to spasm? How much fluid intake I need to have? When and where is there a bathroom that's accessible? So I can cath myself. My bladder is my biggest struggle within my spinal cord injury. Every six months, I get Botox injections in my bladder to help reduce the spasticity. And I take two bladder spasm medicines a day to help prevent spasticity and decrease that I'm very, very excited to be connected with Elitone (a kegel product) and to start this case study within myself, to see if it improves incontinence. And if so, we can help so many women with neurogenic ladder to help them improve their incontinence as well, and, and overall improve their quality of life.
Multi-Modality Research: ONDAMED® Biofeedback/PEMF & the Doppler Ultrasound
August 5, 2022 - Many visionaries in health and medical innovations collaborate on the expansion of their work through continued exploration and referencing from other technologies. Two such innovators have shared countless hours exchanging notes early this year, to finally meet at this special crossroads of scientific exploration. Dr. Silvia Binder (founder of the Binder Institute for Personalized Medicine in So. Germany) and Dr. Robert Bard (seasoned ultrasound researcher and biometric imaging validator) conducted an exploratory performance review through the integration between their respective non-invasive technologies.
The innovation in review is the ONDAMED®- a full-body biofeedback device + PEMF therapeutic solution designed to target the root causes of physiological imbalances such as pain, injuries, inflammation and neurological disorders. According to Dr. Binder, this energy therapeutic device has a major global following, recognized in areas including sports medicine, pain management, psychiatry, anti-aging and neurology. This diagnostic imaging project which started in July 8 was designed to confirm the vast number of testimonials about its advantages including (but not limited to) pain & stress reduction, optimizing mental and emotional wellness and balancing hormones and metabolism. This research also hopes to challenge or confirm its ability to support detoxification, enhance cellular nutrient absorption, inflammation reduction, fighting off infections, cellular repair/regeneration, improve the immune function and hemodynamics / circulation. 2022 ROUND TABLE POWERMEET: THE NATIONAL WOMEN'S DIAGNOSTIC NETWORK: April 27, 2022 marks the official launch of the National Women's Diagnostic Network co-produced by the Integrative Pain Healers' Alliance, the AngioFoundation and the NY Cancer Resource Group. Thanks to the collaboration of the co-hosts Dr. Noelle Cutter and Dr. Roberta Kline, the virtual event otherwise known as the Round Table emPOWERMEET / Leadership Conference 2022 united NINE remarkable educators in support of women's health issues. Each speaker shared their own visions, viewpoints and work experiences. They explored the field of care-giving and offered their personal inspirations that added individual energies to this public event. (see complete article on our first Women's emPOWERMEET.)
2/11/2022- MOMMIES ON A MISSION: The Angiofoundation and Integrative Pain Healers Alliance (comprised of physicians, researchers and public educators) and the For Elysa Foundation, a non-profit advocacy group supporting pediatric myocarditis research- united in their first multi-org summit to test drive a coalition concept to unite all advocacy groups for "a common and louder voice for change!" The "spark" of the coalition originally came from two “Doctor Moms”- Dr. Noelle Cutter and Dr. Roberta Kline as part of a research assignment on genomic science and Long Haul (post Covid infection) disorders. Published reports of myocarditis since the early 1900’s about a “sudden heart failure” showed new headlines during the pandemic, drawing a spotlight on the rare viral-driven cardiac disease. Their search led to the For Elysa Foundation, a foundation dedicated to Elysa Rojas (2) who passed away from Viral Myocarditis in January, 2013.

- WITH NEW MUSICAL MUSCLE AND CANCER CLINICAL PARTNERS TOO!
June 25, 2022- Joe Cappello, Executive Director of the ‘Are You Dense?’ Foundation 'brought down the house' at the famous Palace Theater in Waterbury, CT once again. The 2022 Music Fest is about the gift of music, laughter, togetherness and supportive awareness about the awareness of cancer-related breast density health issues.
This longstanding entertainment tradition spans over a decade of connective magic to an ever growing national community of supporters of the "Are You Dense?" mission. This year's headliner was the Funk super-group “The Hollywood All Stars” led by former Epic/CBS Recording Artist and Grammy nominated songwriter & producer Steve Gaspár - bringing back the "No Compromises" Funkin' big sound of Live Horns & Hammond Organ.
7:15pm. The long awaited MusicFest kicks off its spirited night of laughs, music and the tradition of gaining community awareness about the breast density crisis. The driving message of awareness was architected by the matriarch of the foundation, Nancy Cappello, who passed away from treatment complications due to a missed diagnosis due to breast density.
Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, this annual fundraising celebration has been a constant ‘must-see’ for music and comedy fans far and near, attracting droves of loyal fans and new followers to the nationally recognized flagship theater. This year's exemplary response in ticket sales were a reflection of the lifting health mandates, where families and friends are ready to enjoy a night on Main Street once again. Cappello and his board found 2022 to be the right year to finally "get back to the Palace... and get back to business".
Mr. Cappello took the pandemic-related hiatus from the Palace theater as a means of reorganizing and eventual empowerment. "It gave us a chance to look at all sides of our mission and to touch on areas that better supported our objectives... this also meant bringing in new resources and friends that could add new dimension to our goals!" - said Mr. Cappello. An expanded list of prominent sponsors were also excited to get back to public support, including PHILIPS, FUJI FILM, DELPHINUS MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES and the HAROLD LEEVER REGIONAL CANCER CENTER.
As a fundraising event for advocacy, research and education, “Are You Dense?” collected over $18K from ticket sales, raffles and sponsorships- a significant boost from prior years. This year’s special event also joined with many new allies, advocacy groups and community leaders to further elevate the outreach efforts of the Are You Dense? message. One of the top award recipients celebrated in this special night was Sandy Cassanelli, recipient of the ESTHER AWARD, for making a significant and enduring impact on others. In 2015, Ms. Cassanelli was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic Breast Cancer. She launched the Breast Friends Fund (BFF) to fundraise and donate 100% of the money raised to Metastatic Breast Cancer Research.
Kevin Kniery, CEO of The Harold Leever Cancer Center in Waterbury, Ct. received an award for the organization.” The Cancer Center has consistently supported Are You Dense, Inc from the very beginning in many ways and owe them a debt of gratitude”, said Cappello.
Dr. Robert L. Bard, Cancer Diagnostic Imaging specialist of NYC received this year's "CHAMPION OF EXPOSING THE SECRET" award for his clinical and research work in doppler ultrasound technology to offer a supplemental solution to dense breast scanning over mammography. After Dr. Bard's reception speech, the night continued its tradition of celebrating family support with a special surprise appearance; Mrs. Loreto Bard. As a personal inspiration behind Dr. Bard's work, Mrs. Bard shares her loving words of support to all advocates and researchers about the fight against cancer as a breast cancer survivor herself. (play video)
The final honor was presented to Dr. Robert Bard for his work with Are You Dense? on a joint partnership launching the first pilot study of dense breast screening in underserved communities. “Nearly half of all women age 40 and older who get mammograms are found to have dense breasts. Breast density is often inherited, but other factors can influence it. Factors associated with lower breast density include increasing age, having children, and using tamoxifen. Women with dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with fatty breasts, and the risk increases with increasing breast density. This increased risk is separate from the effect of dense breasts on the ability to read a mammogram”, states Dr. Bard.
Are You Dense, inc. is a non-profit 501(c3) foundation dedicated to educating the public on the impact of dense breast tissue on missed, delayed, and later stage breast cancer, in hopes to increase survival of the disease.

Keeping our Athletes Safe with Integrative Research
In support of our young future All-Stars, we need to give them all the best clinical care and preventive science has to offer- to keep them safe and in top healthy shape. Under a collaborative partnership between The Angiofoundation, the Integrative Pain Healers Alliance,The Women’s Diagnostic Network and Moms on a Mission comes a unique advocacy and research initiative to bring access to the top innovations in diagnostic and therapeutic care for our young athletes.
ONE VOICE FOR PUBLIC CARE
The MOMS OF ATHLETES project is a coalition of parents and caregivers that offers a national roundtable collaboration about the current state of contact sports and how our children are directly affected. Through our web-based EmPowermeet Conferences, we can now unite to form open discussions about the most critical topics and explore solutions collectively.
NON-INVASIVE MOVEMENT
Our alliance of professionals and moms are dedicated to finding the safest options in injury and pain care. This includes the modern non-invasive (non-surgical) alternatives where possible. NCMOA also teams up with the professional pain and medical associations to collaborate on latest protocols and information on ground-breaking neurostimulation, electromagnetic, holistic/full-body solutions and wearable therapeutics plus the latest in non-radiation clinical imaging review.

DILIGENT RESEARCH BY A SPORTS-MOM By Donna Febres, Ph.D
Pain is something that I'm learning as a parent, that many athletes will just be living through. Some undergo chronic pain and others deal with acute pain as well. I speak to many professional athletes and their families about living with injuries and I had to come to grips with the fact that my son who loves contact sports was going to somehow, some way will get injured. That’s just the nature of the sports he plays. From the sidelines (in recovery), I can see them reflect on the many kinds of measures available to get back on their feet, or at the very least- get some relief. For my son, I found myself doing deep research on the latest protocols and any new modalities. I was completely amazed by this electromagnetic field science for the opportunity to bring recovery non-invasively. Having further discussed this technology with one of the top orthopedic surgeons was the reassurance I needed that managing my son’s injury was in very safe hands! Thanks to Dr. Bard’s process, I watched my son get back on the field after one treatment, and having the means of monitoring the injury in progress- is absolutely remarkable science.
SYNCHRONIZED IMAGING OF TREATMENT PROGRESS
One program for athletic pain and injuries is designed by Dr. Robert Bard (clinical diagnostician) aligning with with physiatrists from the realm of functional medicine to explore and refine what he aims to propose to be the next stage of evolution for imaging. “Combining the functions of real-time monitoring of ultrasound with these regenerative stimulators, we are able to see their immediate effects on the body. With enough stress testing, we have proven that we have 100% compatibility (and no signal disruption) between the ultrasound probes while scanning the areas under electronic treatment- or vice-versa. This is great news because our tests are of the body’s biometric response on a micro level- and these treatment devices all have some complex magnetic signals and emitters that may conflict with sound waves”, states Dr. Bard. (SEE complete review)
On a separate interview, NFL Alumni Director of Wellness Challenge Mr. Russ Allen applauds Dr. Bard’s research initiative for athletic injuries and the use of non-invasive intervention to get players back on the field. “I have been a major fan of this PEMF technology for over a decade”, said Mr. Allen. “Someday, I hope to see the thought of drugs, shots and surgery in the past tense. So much about conventional medicine (and sports medicine) need an upgrade… especially when we have so many of these innovations that clearly show proven and sustainable results. Dr. Bard is definitely on the right side of science by validating through imaging and encouraging non-invasive care, where seeing is believing.”

HONORING THE 699 RESPONDERS @ THE 1975 NY TEL DISASTER
5/22/2022- The Fire Bell Club of NY and the FDNY Fire Academy, aka "The Rock" in Randall’s Island, NY commemorated the 699 first responders of the 1975 NY Telephone Exchange Fire (Feb. 27, 1975) with the Memorial Wall and Plaque Dedication Ceremony. With honored speakers including Chief John Hodgens (acting Chief of the Dept) and Honorary Battalion Chief, Sergio Nieto and President, Fire Bell Club.
The highlight of the presentation was an historical depiction of the 1975 disaster by public crusader, ret. FF Daniel J. Noonan from Ladder Company 3 (and one of the remaining survivors) who took on a life's mission to publicly promote service-wide national awareness of the devastating health impact of this modern disaster that occurred over 47 years ago. He spoke nationally about the many illnesses and cancer cases came about from this "plastic fire" due to the exposure of burning PVC piping (Polyvinyl Chloride and other carcinogenic compounds). Mr. Noonan's powerful statement defined this fire to be the 'game changer' for fire safety about fire safety stating "the days of wood and cotton fires are over!".
The emotion-filled event was powerfully concluded with a loving recognition of Mr. Noonan's work by his fellow advocates from the "Get Checked Now! crew of the First Responders' Cancer Resource. The highest collective honor from the org called 'The Robert L. Bard Distinguished Advocacy Leadership Award' was presented by "Cousin" Sal Banchitta (ret FDNY from Engine 316) from F.A.C.E.S. (Firefighters Against Cancer & Exposures) and the NY Cancer Resource Alliance.
In addition, a rare and special appearance by Dr. Bard himself, founder of the institution behind the advocacy award and Chief Medical Advisor for F.A.C.E.S. Dr. Bard is one of the first non-departmental medical speakers welcomed by the fire service to offer his professional perspective on the type of exposure of this landmark disaster. "After my military service, I opened my radiology practice in the early 70's in NYC- just a few short years before the Telephone Fire. I remember this day very well. Events like this inspired me to do more... and to offer the kind of care to all exposed service members whose sacrifice deserves the same ‘above and beyond’ attention that they have always provided us."

From Small Firehouses to the FD Academy: A Landmark of Perseverance and A NEW DAY FOR "GET CHECKED NOW!"
Seeing Dr. Bard on that FDNY podium at the Fire Academy stoked a long awaited exhale of a dream come true from our many fellow advocates! To have our senior cancer awareness crusader and the patriarch of integrative diagnostics speak on behalf of our national fire service association commemorating the responders of one of "NYC's first major cancer clusters" is a touchdown and an historical landmark for our "Get Checked Now!" program.
Since Dr. Bard and I first met, we were recruited by Dr. Lennard Gettz (former GZ cleanup volunteer) who formed an outreach to all 9/11 responders' cancer cases. We met with countless community leaders and began presenting in small firehouses and group meetings. We met so many who need a second opinion and the kind of medical attention that was not always available to all institutions. Little by little, we started getting the attention of firefighter groups like the RMA (Retired Members' Association), then the Columbia Association who both gave us presentation time. The topic of cancer has always been a heavy one to pitch, and we learned (fast) that bring a cancer patient advocate meant walking carefully through the field of political land mines and sensitivity regulations.
In 2018, we presented to Chief Bobby Halton (Fire Engineering / FDIC) who was himself a major resource and connector in the fire service community. He connected us with Dan Noonan, a powerhouse activist for all the fire service whose thundering presence captured the national scene since 1975- and the rest, as they say, is HISTORY in the making! Together, we took on every podcast and media outlet, reaching even more attention from the fire service where cancer risk may be more prevalent. Over time, our little group became the national order (F.A.C.E.S.) presenting for some of the most recognized groups. Associations began supporting us like the Fire Bell Club of NY (annual meeting at the NYC Fire Museum on 11/2021) and now, at the most recent official commemoration at the Fire Academy (aka "The Rock") set the stage for what's possible with perseverance- and what else we can do next! Under the spirit of a united love for fellow responders, the "Get Checked Now!" button made its way in so many firehouses from Long Island to the inner boroughs to Westchester County, then throughout the national stage like Florida, Texas, Connecticut, New Mexico and even Ontario (Canada).
(Video Part 1 of 3) Nationally recognized firefighter Chief Bobby Halton (FDIC / Fire Engineering) will be hosting our VIEWPOINTS series about the Commemoration Ceremony of the 699 First Responders on 5/21/2022 honoring the many who sacrificed ALL at the 1975 NY Tel Exchange Fire. This clip glows an intro about a special photo of three responder advocates in front of the 1975 Fire memorial wall starting with Dr. Robert Bard (L) + upcoming stories about Ret. FDNY Firefighters Dan Noonan and Sal Banchitta. This video starts with an emotional montage of photos from the event. Special thanks to FDNY Hon. Chief Sergio Nieto of the NY Fire Bell Club.
VIEWPOINTS EXTRA
"Dan Noonan's impactful delivery and presentation approach under his personal mission of public advocacy is best to be described as a work of true art. I've watched him diligently reshape and re-polish his story in every turn, perfecting a vivid picture about the 1975 fire- leaving all audiences with a true-to-life experience after each of his presentations. His latest depiction was undoubtedly his best version yet- adding even more detail and inflection and passion to the story. He brought us there as a young probie jumping into action that fateful day, unaware of the many dangers and health implications. His 40+ years of work continues to honor the sacrifice of 699 firefighters from the disaster, but having him at the helm with his unyielding commitment to educate firsthand makes him that 'perfect soldier for advocacy'. By delivering us all back to 1975 (on 13th & 2nd), into his bunker gear and his boots during that exact horrendous event is in and of itself the most powerful and effective form of time travel and the highest form of art." - Lennard M. Gettz, Ed.D / VP, Firefighters Against Cancer & Exposures
ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE
Saturday, May 21, 2022 @ 10:00 am, the Fire Academy Auditorium in Randall’s Island, NY will commemorate the 699 first responders of the 1975 NY Telephone Exchange Fire with the Memorial Wall and Plaque Dedication Ceremony.
After 47 years, the 699 FDNY Responders will finally receive proper honors for their sacrifice at the ill-fated, historical NY Telephone Company Fire that occurred on Feb. 27, 1975. Those responders who were unknowingly exposed to the most hazardous carcinogens are finally receiving their well-deserved commemoration of their sacrifice. Since that fateful event, Ret. Firefighter from Ladder Company 3 (and one of the remaining survivors) took on a life's mission to publicly promote service-wide advocacy and education about fire safety while referencing the 1975 fire and all the critical hazards that resulted in many injuries and deaths.
Many illnesses and cancer cases came about from this "plastic fire" due to the exposure of burning PVC piping (Polyvinyl Chloride and other carcinogenic compounds). Thanks to Mr. Noonan's many videos, articles and public presentations nationwide (where he presented the complexity and dangers of this rescue mission) the message of prevention and early detection earned a powerful voice for the main calls to action for all rescue responders today. Dan Noonan has tirelessly promoted and echoed "the many lessons learned" from the department's most challenging disasters. He led other advocacy initiatives in the fire service, often relating the NY Tel Exchange Fire as one of the city's most dangerous fires. Unlike other fires before this, the results and investigative data about the 1975 NY Tel Fire was an overwhelmingly different type of disaster as far as its after-effects and the many layers of damage both to the city and to the responders, communication workers and the residents in the immediate area.
Thanks to the coordination of Hon. Chief Sergio Nieto (President of the Fire Bell Club) and Deputy Assistant Chief Frank Leeb, Chief of the Fire Academy, Dan Noonan's life-long mission to bring honor to those who risked everything to battle this historical fire and to give all the responders their proper homage. Originally scheduled for 2/27/2022, The Verizon building (formerly Bell Telephone) at 204 Second Avenue & Thirteenth Street in the East Village of NYC was finally going to receive the long-awaited memorial plaque about the 1975 NY Tel Fire. "In 47 years, it's time New York City gave proper honors to the 699 firefighters as a means of recognizing their sacrifices," states Hon. Chief Nieto. "The NY Tel Fire of 1975 was a first in so many ways, including a marker for fire safety protocols and a pivotal reference for cancer awareness."
In addition to this commemorative event sparked new initiatives for the Fire Academy. Scheduled for the spring, Chief Leeb will produce a comprehensive new training resource and interactive video presentation of lessons learned from the 1975 fire. An introduction will be Dan Noonan's overview for all generations of fire service members describing the many hazards that first responders can be exposed to from today's fires- and the possible aftermath on their health. As an historical and educational treasure to the fire service, Dan's crusade shall be forever memorialized in the very lesson plans for all cadets- all the way to the retirees.
Due to Covid concerns, the official commemoration event has been moved from 2/27 to a future date later in the Spring of 2022. The event is to take place at the Fire Academy on Randall's Island (otherwise known as "The Rock") where Dan Noonan will finally witness the recognition of his brothers and sisters and their sacrifice 47 years ago. Included in the roster is the retired members who fought the 1975 fire and their families, FDNY Color Guard and the Pipes & Drums Band, and invitees include the FDNY Chaplain, past and current fire commissioners and the Chief of Department. In addition, lead cancer advocate and philanthropist Dr. Robert L. Bard from the NY Cancer Resource Alliance and the F.A.C.E.S. Foundation (Firefighters Against Cancer & Exposures) will also make an appearance to present the top recognition for Dan Noonan's decades of commitment to public communication about the lessons learned from this landmark fire. “Recognizing these responders’ sacrifice is so important for our city’s history and culture… and identifying the type of exposures from this specific fire is also crucial for public safety education and future generations of firefighters. Remembrance of the 1975 NY Tel Fire encompasses both of these goals!”

EXTRA:
We continue to honor Dr. Deborah Wallace as the driving force for the educational movement about the many new hazards of "Modern Plastic Fires", especially the exposures to burning polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
Walt Whitman in 'Song of Myself ' Praised Firefighters: “Lads ahold of fire-engines and hook-and-ladder ropes no less to me than the gods of the antique wars”.
By. Deborah Wallace, Ph.D.
But firefighters are mortals with lungs, hearts, brains, skin, and other organs vulnerable to physico-chemical insult. With the wide use of synthetic materials such as PVC, polyurethane, ABS, and nylon, fires and high-heat situations generate smoke and fumes containing both extremely irritating, tissue-destroying caustics and carcinogenic, mutagenic, neurotoxic, and hormonally-mimetic organic chemicals, such as dioxins and dibenzofurans. The scientific community has known most of the facts since the 1970’s. In 1969, New York City’s Fire Commissioner Lowry issued an alert about PVC fumes and smoke and urged use of airpacks.
Firefighters belong among the Environmental Justice communities. From Louisiana’s cancer-alley Black towns poisoned by plastics factories to New Jersey’s blue-collar freeholds poisoned by emissions from plastics-molding processes to the working-class homeowners and renters affected by the Love Canal toxic dump to the towering infernos of cities where visually impenetrable walls of PVC soot envelop firefighters, the petrochemical industry has created many, many Environmental Justice communities.
The Telephone Exchange firefighters are icons of regulatory failure, a failure that turns our homes and workplaces into potential deathtraps and sources of permanent health impairment. The illnesses, injuries, and deaths of this cohort should not be forgotten. The cause of these illnesses, injuries, and deaths must be addressed with building codes and toxicity regulations. Negligence and corruption in code and regulation development made the New York Telephone Exchange Fire almost as much an act of terrorism as the attack on the World Trade Center.
The petrochemical industry will lose massive revenue because of climate change imperatives that limit fossil fuels. It plans to compensate by making more plastics and finding more ways of replacing traditional materials with them. If the industry succeeds in this change, the firefighting environment will present even more hazards to health and life. We must honor the New York Telephone Exchange firefighters by preventing this cynical gambit and by demanding protective building codes and toxics regulations.
"When I first read it ("In the Mouth of the Dragon" - by Dr. Deborah Wallace) in 1990 my friends thought I was being hyperbolic. Not anymore, further Dr. Wallace has never once not gone above and beyond in helping me to get the word out."
- Chief Bobby Halton
HONORING DAN
When the NY Cancer Resource Alliance and F.A.C.E.S Foundation (Firefighters Against Cancer & Exposures) learned about Dan Noonan's presentation, national ambassadors like "Cousin Sal" Banchitta (Ret. FDNY FF from Engine 316), Dave Dachinger (Ret. Lt. from the Ridgefield CT Fire Department) and F.A.C.E.S. President Lt. Chris Conner (Bedford TX) flocked at the opportunity to partner with the NY Fire Bell Club to present Dan's long awaited Lifetime Achievement Honor. "It's about time Dan received the recognition he long deserved all DECADES of public speaking and outreach! As a direct historian for the 1975 Fire, all firefighters throughout the US continues to learn from this and other disasters and thanks to the power of his writing and his videos in YouTube, his voice IS ALSO OUR VOICE to support all first responders. Dan is the original torch bearer and an inspiration to us all!" In a separate interview after the 11/9 event, Chief Nieto stated, “Dan has unending passion to bring a lot of knowledge about prevention and early detection … especially for the 'probies' and the younger members. They hear these talks in the fire academy, but Dan continues to keep stressing it- really bringing it home. The importance of self-responsibility and self-awareness about safety- especially after a job.”
Thanks in part to the NY Fire Bell Club and the cooperation from Verizon, sources say the 699 responders of the 1975 Fire are about to is receive the proper and due recognition for their sacrifice and service in the form of a memorial plaque to be installed at the former NY Tel Exchange building (204 Second Avenue and Thirteenth Street in the East Village, NYC) plus a street naming related to the fire. The unveiling is said to occur in early February, 2022.
