WHAT IS BRAIN TRAINING? JUST ASK MARILYN ABRAHAMSON

Brain Training 101
Partly sparked by the global need for cognitive health during the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Brain Health Collaborative is co-directed by Marilyn Abrahamson, recognized brain performance educator. Her current BRAIN TRAINING program is designed to reduce their risks for development of memory disorders and stave off age-related cognitive decline. The curriculum will include the pillars of brain health - with lifestyle choices that support a healthy brain - and instruction in strategies for more focused attention, better memory and executive function skills. This form of education reduces dementia risk and also provides people with actionable tasks that increase brain performance for higher levels of self-efficacy and success. In later years, possessing these skills will also reduce daily overwhelm and the impulse to prematurely relinquish their personal responsibilities and tasks to family members.

March 2023 IPHA Top Advocacy Role Model & New Associate Director of the "Brain Health Collaborative"

A special congratulations to Ms. Marilyn Abrahamson, Brain Health Research and Education Specialist. She has designed the "Long Live Your Brain (LLYB)" program - an online Brain-Health and Neuroplasticity Coaching program to support optimizing brain performance.

IPHA's leadership panel recognized Marilyn's brilliant insights and her true devotion to the study of all areas of BRAIN HEALTH. She is an undeniable crusader and a talented communicator -  traits that frame the very spirit of our IPHA professional community.  On March 1, 2023, IPHA officially nominated Marilyn to the role of Associate Director of the BRAIN HEALTH COLLABORATIVE.  Her expertise will be put to task to expand the organization's public exchange about brain diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, outreach efforts to connect with innovators in the science of brain health & training and support the continued growth of our network of brain-related experts.

In a recent interview with Ms. Abrahamson, she stated, "One of my current projects is development of a brain health education and training program to help people reduce their risks for development of memory disorders and stave off age-related cognitive decline. The curriculum will include the pillars of brain health - with lifestyle choices that support a healthy brain - and instruction in strategies for more focused attention, better memory and executive function skills. Not only does this type of education reduce dementia risk, it also provides people with actionable tasks that increase brain performance for higher levels of self-efficacy and success. In later years, possessing these skills will also reduce daily overwhelm and the impulse to prematurely relinquish their personal responsibilities and tasks to family members. This delay can extend independence and quality of life, giving them more independent years. It would be my pleasure to be able to get to know, share ideas and collaborate with everyone in this group. There's nothing more important and meaningful to me than learning from other professionals, and passing that knowledge onto others."

Since 1987, Marilyn has been working with patients to improve communication and cognitive functioning for conditions ranging from traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative conditions. She found her niche in 2016 after creating Minds in Motion, a community and hospital-wide brain health education program at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, New Jersey. Through the Minds in Motion program, healthy agers and those experiencing cognitive changes learned the pillars of brain health, in addition to methods and techniques for better memory and thinking skills like focused attention, processing speed, organization, planning and problem-solving. It has become Marilyn’s life mission to teach people how to live a brain-healthy lifestyle and to use their brain differently by acquiring information more efficiently and storing it more effectively.

Marilyn offers her brain-health education in a unique and well-rounded way by blending what she has gleaned from both aspects of her career; first as a speech-language pathologist and then, as an Amen Clinics Certified Brain Health Coach. She believes the curriculum should always include guidance for proper adoption of brain healthy lifestyle choices, in addition to compensatory techniques for sharpening focus and attention, strategies for better memory, tools to improve processing speed, and step-by-step simplified methods for independently performing their own personal responsibilities.

Beginning with the brain-health basics, Marilyn’s holistic approach teaches the Six Steps to Living a Brain-Healthier Life; one that supports a healthier, more voluminous, and better functioning brain. Following that, she offers instruction for how to change the way they use their brain, consistent with her philosophy, “if your brain has changed, you need to use it differently”.

In addition to providing brain health coaching and education to her clients, Marilyn creates brain-health educational content and offers brain health coaching for Ceresti Health, a start-up that supports, activates, and empowers family care partners. She also continues to work with her Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease online brain training groups. In addition, she is developing a brain health education and coaching program in collaboration with Dr. Roberta Kline (NM). This program will be dedicated to bringing awareness about the need for brain health education and coaching for people living with post-covid brain fog to help them return to peak performance so they can get back to work, and to life. Marilyn also hopes to collaborate with others in the Brain Health Collaborative to offer brain health programs for people recovering from post-concussion syndrome.

Going forward, she hopes to be able to continue to serve others in this way, by helping her clients perform their best, reduce their risks for cognitive decline, succeed in their jobs, enhance and extend their independence, and live their best brain-healthy life.

BRAIN HEALTH REVIEW [Part 3]: POST-COVID BRAIN FOG & WORK PERFORMANCE

Written by: Marilyn Abrahamson, MA,CCC-SLP - CBHC

For some, Post-Covid brain fog can cause everyday cognitive tasks to be more difficult, causing the thought of returning to work to become daunting. Among the many symptoms of Long Covid, one study suggests that up to 80% of Covid-19 survivors suffer from neuropsychological symptoms such as memory impairment, attention deficit, executive dysfunction, difficulty with word finding, multitasking, and impaired visual/spatial skills. These are skills people need to properly perform their jobs, and without these skills, people can become overwhelmed by the smallest tasks.

Another study specifically measured the effects of brain fog on quality of life (QoL) at work. It showed that QoL at work was reduced for over 75% of study participants continuing to experience brain fog symptoms. There were many symptoms included under the umbrella term brain fog, however, in this study, memory problems and difficulty with multitasking had the most significant impact on QoL at work.

Analyzing STRESS & ANXIETY from a holistic point of view means identifying the body’s interconnected systems (ie. circulatory, cardiovascular, nervous, lymphatic, endocrine etc.) and its many touch points for stimulation.   This analysis should also offer a comprehensive breakdown of the body's HEALING capacity- which includes our hormones, digestive system, immune system, brain, heart-- all the way down to our cells and mitochondria.  Stress is part of life, and comes in many forms including physical, emotional, mental and environmental. Foods we eat, unhealthy relationships, difficulties at work, toxins in our environment, even poor posture or lack of sunshine can all create stress on our bodies. But when stress is catastrophic or becomes chronic, it creates imbalances in this functioning that are much more likely to promote disease while at the same time preventing healing from taking place.

NEUROPLASTICITY: 8 Reasons We All Need to Learn About Brain HealthThe word Neuroplasticity ignites a feeling of hope. For clinicians and therapists working with patients with all types of brain injuries, understanding neuroplasticity is crucial. Because neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change and adapt in response to new learning and new experiences, it can change both a clinician's choice of therapeutic techniques as well as the duration of the patient’s therapeutic program.  We now know that, even in the absence of brain injury or illness, teaching people how to help their brain to more easily adapt, change and grow as we age is the key to maintaining cognitive health. That’s how we remain sharp and resilient into our advanced years, but there’s more to it than that.  The answers to the following seven questions will help us to better understand why brain health education is so very important to all of us.

2023 Medical Role Model: DR. PAUL DRESCHNACK

2/5/2023- The Integrative Pain Healers Alliance proudly awards DR. PAUL DRESCHNACK the 2023 Medical Role Model Award.  He is officially recognized for his exemplary work and generous achievements to the many needy patients whose lives he affected (and even saved).  Dr. Dreschnack holds a significant record in performing reconstructive surgery to some of the most advanced yet underserved cases in our community.  He is an asset to the medical community, an inspiration to all medical responders both locally and overseas.

CLEFT PALATE PROCEDURES:
Nobel Peace Prize Congressional Nomination for Humanitarianism

Transcribed from the U.S. Congressional Record of the House of Representatives (4/1/1998). re-published by IPHA NEWS Editorial team.

HONORING DR. PAUL DRESCHNACK - Drafted by: Honorable Michael Bilirakis of FLA in the House of Representatives

Mr. Bilirakis, Mr. Speaker. I rise today to commend the work of one of my constituents, Dr. Paul Dreschnack-- a plastic surgeon who spends several weeks each year in India, voluntarily performing free operations on children born with facial defects. I recently nominated Dr. Dreschnack and his mentor, Dr. Sharad Kumar Dicksheet, for a Nobel Peace Prize. I would like to share with our colleagues the letter I submitted with their nomination application.

On behalf of the United States House of Representatives, I thank Dr. Dreschnack and Dr. Dicksheet for their tireless work.  They are very worthy of this prestigious award and would uphold its tradition of outstanding recipients if it is awarded to them.

Dear Nobel Committee Members: It is my distinct privilege to bring before the Committee two physicians whose humanitarian contributions in the area of medicine have prompted me to submit their names for consideration as Nobel Prize Laureates.

I became acquainted with the work of Dr. Dicksheet and Dr. Dreschnack during a recent meeting with representatives from a local chapter of an international civic organization, the Rotary Club of Dunedin, North.  The story that unfolded over the next several hours could be submitted by the headlines of some of the articles contained in their packet: "The Doctor's Heart: A New York Doctor Returns to India to Give His Life's Earnings Back": "New Life to the Deformed"; "One Man, 20,000 Lives."

Most of us, as we mature and recognize that we have been the recipient of unearned blessings or talents in life, desire to give back to he community.  Such is the motive driving both Dr. Discksheet and Dr. Dreschnack. But their vision, the longevity and the largesse of their contributions sets them apart among men.

For thirty years, Dr. Sharad Dicksheet has spent approximately six months each year in the poorest regions of India, providing free surgery to those in need. He brings with him a small team of surgeons, often paying for their travel out of his own funds.

They arrive at one of the many Plastic Surgery Camps, or Shibers, as they are called. Year after year, the routine has been the same.  By daybreak, hundreds of people have arrived (some traveling hundreds of miles) to be evaluated for treatment.  In the recent years the number of arriving at each site has often increased to over one-thousand people.

Time and resources dictate that only those deemed treatable can be assured of surgery. The3 patients are primarily cleft lip and or cleft palate cases but include a variety of facial deformities of joints, and deformed ears and eyes.

By nine o'clock, separate operating tables have been set up for the team and the surgeries begin, continuing uninterrupted until six o'clock in the evening.  AN average of thirty-five surgeries are performed daily, but many times the number reaches more than fifty.  The statistics are phenomenal.  Since Dr. Dicksheet began his work in 1968, more than 40,000 operations have been performed. Financially, his contributions exceed $80 Million.

But what does the work mean to his patients? Nothing short of a new life! Infants who would have died, unable to suck milk, now thrive. Families outcast by the social stigma of deformity, are restored. Young girls (and boys), unmarriageable and unable to work or make a living, have a future.  Each of the 40,000 cases has a life changing story.  It would be impossible to accurately estimate the thousands of people whose lives have been positively affected by Dr. Dicksheet and his associates.  And when you consider that the doctors also each surgical techniques to Indian surgeons through the Indian Medical Society, the number increases even more.

What makes Dr. Dicksheet's story even more remarkable is that the doctor has conducted the majority of his humanitarian work while he, himself, has been in grave health.  About 18 years ago he underwent surgery for laryngeal cancer. His speech is, for the most part, inaudible and he must communicate in writing much of the time.  Ten years ago, he suffered a severe heart attack, followed by another attack in 1994.  In spite of his health he has continued to raise funds, travel and operate from a wheelchair.  At this time, however, his health has further deteriorated.  He is not expected to live much longer.  Over the years he has treated each day as a "bonanza" and has filled it with giving his life to his fellow man.  "I feel good in giving this service to my countrymen," he responds when asked about his work.

What will happen to his work? Preparation has been made to turn the work over to the very capable hands of Dr. Paul Dreschnack, who has worked with Dr. Dicksheet for nine years and shares his vision, enthusiasm and dedication. As Dr. Dreschnack responds in an interview in 1995, "I'll be doing it (the work) for a long time,"  I am very proud to count Dr. Paul Dreschnack as a resident of my Congressional District.

The humanitarian contributions of these men sets an example for the world.  They exemplify how much more we can give when we are willing to give our lives, totally.  They show us how much longer our vision can be when we refuse to see obstacles and we view our fellow man as a brother.

I am very pleased to bring Dr. Sharad Kumar Dicksheet and Dr. Paul Dreschnack before you.

With best wishes, I am Sincerely yours-

MICHAEL BILIRAKIS, Member of Congress

THE POWER OF COLLABORATION
By. Robert L. Bard, MD

Known by many of his peers as "Dr. Sir. Paul " (knighted by various European nations for his philanthropic work), I am honored to forge a collaborative partnership with his NYC practice and the advancement of his therapeutic research projects.

Dr. Dreschnack stands today as one of the top rated experts in reconstructive and cosmetic procedures, while representing the best direction for the future of our medical society. He is one of the finest advocates for global health and a leader in some of the latest procedural innovations. Where a 4x nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize might affect one’s ego, Dr. Dreschnack remains the same kind and humble soul - always engaging others with that unending passion for collaborative ventures. When he first toured my diagnostic imaging facility in NYC, we immediately bonded because of his passion and uncompromising creativity for advancing therapeutic protocols.  Our relationship was cemented around the joys of technical brainstorming and the common goal of making a difference in patient care.

Reflecting on his work in India, Dr. Dreschnack broke new ground in clinical intervention protocols. His surgical talents combined with his courage to overcome geopolitical restrictions made his international crusade possible, improving and saving over 30,000 children's lives.  For this, he is clearly recognized in the world stage and well deserving of it.

Robert L. Bard, MD, DABR, FAIUM, FASLMS
Having paved the way for the study of various cancers both clinically and academically, Dr. Robert Bard is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of 21st Century 3-D ULTRASONOGRAPHIC VOLUMETRIC DOPPLER IMAGING. He co-founded the 9/11 CancerScan program to bring additional diagnostic support to all first responders from Ground Zero. His main practice in midtown, NYC (Bard Diagnostic Imaging- www.CancerScan.com) uses the latest in digital Imaging technology has been also used to help guide biopsies and in many cases, even replicate much of the same reports of a clinical invasive biopsy.

What is DR. PAUL DRESCHNACK Up To Today?

Dr. Paul Dreschnack is an internationally established reconstructive surgeon, a medical researcher and a humanitarian. He has been the recipient of numerous knighthoods, countless awards from the medical community and is a four time Nobel Peace Prize nominee [see Tampa Bay Times news/9/12/2005]. His expanded research in innovative therapeutic modalities continue to bring recognized success to his many patients and the world of medicine.

As a multimodality specialist, the success of Dr. Dreschnack's mission comes from combining the latest clinical findings from his advanced biological research work with his leadership in surgical care. From 1978-1999, Dr. Dreschnack achieved world notoriety with a team of surgeons by operating on an est. 250,000 to 300,000 children (free of charge) with birth defects in India.  This surgery impacted so many lives from social exclusion, unemployment and limited marriage possibilities, that often lead to the death of these children.

Today, Dr. Dreschnack continues to perform his specialized work in both reconstructive surgery and therapeutic care. He runs various private practices throughout the New York/New Jersey area and is also the chief surgical specialist at PAUL A. DRESCHNACK, MD. P.C. in the New York metropolitan area.  Moreover, Dr. Dreschnack was recently appointed a top educational advocacy role with IPHA (Integrative Pain Healers Alliance) and is poised to form new research protocols on restorative care and advanced recovery solutions.

AN average of thirty-five surgeries are performed daily, but many times the number oreaches more than fifty.

I am very pleased ot bring Dr. Sharad Kumar Dicksheet and Dr. Paul Dreschnack before you.

With best wishes, I am Sincerely yours,

MICHAEL BILRAKIS, member of Congress.

Who is DR. PAUL DRESCHNACK?

CELEBRATING THE ART OF RELATIONSHIP BUILDING IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Written by: Lennard M. Gettz, Ed.D

"Most of us have not (yet) physically met, but our synergy helped unite us under our common professional interests..."

Whether in LIFE, WORK or A NEW VENTURE, many popular rules about relationships remain prevalent through one's path to success:

    1) It's WHO you know...
    2) Never GO it alone...
    3) There is no I in team
    4) You are who your FRIENDS are
    5) It takes a VILLAGE -
    6) "Growth doesn't happen in a vacuum" [2]
    7) "No one knows everything... open up to others to fuel our continued knowledge"
    8) And then there is that classic Beatles tune "I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends"

EVOLUTION IN PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING
From 1998-2008, I ran a magazine called B2BNETEVENTS- reporting on the 'business networking' at a time when business card exchange parties were rampant. The allure of meeting business owners and reps gave the hope of expanding your sales and creating new partnerships was the IT thing to do in business development.  Quantifying the return on investment of attending these events (the gas, the dry-cleaning and the time spent), most networkers fall short of actually getting ANY real business from this mode of self-promotion. I personally found myself at the end of this era setting fire to over 3 barrels full of business cards that amounted to nothing (after dedicated follow-ups) thinking "we need a better way to connect with the world".

...AND THEN THERE'S LINKEDIN
In 2009, a converted networker showed me a website that was a powerfully growing trend in finding professionals in just about ANY industry. LINKEDIN is that go-to place for search for and to connect with just about anyone in any field.  As with the rise of dating sites, this digital meet-and-greet followed the trend of RELATIONSHIP MARKETING without the 'sweat equity' and the exhaustive pains of traditional face-to-face events.

"GO DIGITAL" FOR THE PRICE OF A THUMBS-UP
To date, Linkedin stands as the undisputed conduit for meeting leaders in just about any field.  FORBES calls Linkedin "the best option...hands down, (as) the largest professional network available in the world!"

Where the face-to-face alternative gets you 20-30 business cards and conversations per event, Linkedin offers the power of international-to-local searchers with unlimited communication and exchange potential with countless members within short amount of time.

As an industry information resource, the SHARING/PUBLISHING aspect of Linkedin offers true inside perspective on just about any product, service or campaign.  All professionals hold the opportunity to showcase their expertise and present updates on their product or technology thanks to the powerful post-publishing and streaming platform.  Posting an article or an announcement can get you the attention of would-be connections that could end up being your next business partner with very little effort.

For the medical community (where most of my clients reside), sharing the latest innovations and protocols is an ideal place to share with the professional community- and private groups which Linkedin is also known for.

"In partnerSHIPs or friendSHIPs, the suffix "ship" is taken from an Old High Germanic word 'schaffen' meaning "to CREATE" or "to BUILD" - [1]

FINDING YOUR PEOPLE
Decades into finding synergy and relationship building (where all practices thrive), it's all about finding your own circle.  To work with a trusted network of partners is the key to any success.  Using all available resources (including referral sourcing or 'word of mouth') to meet and know one another is STILL the key to ultimate growth.

BUILDING AND GROWING YOUR OWN CIRCLE
Each day, alliances and professional groups are built, promoting collaboration, joint ventures and other efforts that call for combined leaderships co-working for a larger goal.  More than safety in numbers, there is a sensible source of power in exploring new territories or expanding one's current essence WITH the joint support and empowerment of a collective and unified team. None of us as to GO it alone anymore!

Building a Global Network- Thanks to Digital Connections

One of IPHA's esteemed clinical collaborators is Dr. Robert Bard- diagnostic imaging specialist in NYC. His 35+ years in practice has connected him with countless medical visionaries and industry leaders far and wide under the spirit of patient care or joint research.  His  expansive network continues to attract local to national to global exchange- where his digital ultrasound has become the perfect collaboration technology.  Where collaboration can build friendships, many great minds eventually make their way to an office visit.   (1) Dr. Paul Dreschnack- reconstructive surgeon, NY  (2) Prof. Joseph Toy- neuromagnetic therapy, Montreal CA  (3) Pat Ziemer- Magnawave PEMF, Louisville, KY), Silvia Binder, Ondamed Biofeedback (Freiburg/Baden-Württemberg, Germany) and January Howard, Aesthetics Specialist (Ft. Lauderdale, FLA).

The Trend in Business Connectivity
The world has changed and so have we! After COVID, many of us now connect with friends or companies online instead of face-to-face. We can post something to reach millions right away! And, it's not just for fun - lots of people join forces via the internet too. They help those in business who are facing hard decisions all around the globe by sharing stories, educating each other and communicating together as one community. On top that, virtual meetings and messaging platforms make getting business done super easy! This new Digital Age is totally revolutionizing business and personal relationships in a big way. - Patrick Ziemer, CEO - Founder MagnaWave PEMF & Aura Wellness

The Beacon for Fellow Change-Makers
"As we navigate in the post COVID world, professionals have had to evolve to be successful in maintaining and establishing relationships.  Whether on a personal or professional level, we have become dependent on digital media.  In the past connecting with people involved a cold call, a conference, convention and/or tradeshow now a single post can reach millions of potential customers.  Another benefit of the digital arena is bringing together like minded professionals to embark on crusades to educate, advocate and communicate.  Many people who have suffered from unfortunate circumstances now have an alliance from all across the world to advocate for their cause.  Virtual meetings can be performed on a regular basis.  This new age of communication is revolutionizing how business is done.  When the word Zoom is now used as a verb (Let's Zoom that) that is enough evidence to know the change has occurred"   -
Josh Schueller, PT (Rockford, MI)

Genuine Synergy in Partnerships
Entrepreneurship can be a rocky road, especially when we’re going it alone, but, with support from others in a way that facilitates synergy, we can all achieve so much more. When we make fortuitous connections, creating synergistic relationships with others who share our passion, they contribute to our purpose - and in turn, we contribute to theirs.  In order to learn more from others, I took to LinkedIn. These connections provided me with the potential for opportunities that would have never developed otherwise. I was contacted by the CEO of a start-up that needed a brain health specialist. As a result, I was offered the opportunity to merge my brain-health coaching practice with his start-up, which already had established marketing and business strategies. This confirmed to me, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the potential for these opportunities were not coincidental and the benefits of these relationships have been too numerous to count.    - Marilyn Abrahamson, MA,CCC-SLP - CBHC (Morganville, NJ)

Team Building 2.0
"How can movers and shakers in the health field lend their knowledge and talent into an amazing think tank, without taking time off to travel- and still have a meaningful conversation?  The art of Relationship Building answers that question. The world gets a little smaller each time like-minded professionals can meet face-to-face, and do so in a “semi-formal” way, getting the business/task at hand worked on, and sharing parts of our lives that make us all human, and approachable as a “digital neighbor”. We all know how much global carbon we save by using digital think tanks. There are even “break out rooms” for people to work in smaller groups to get to an answer, or get to know each other in a shorter period of time, which is one of the main benefits this technology provides - saving time. The face-to-face time spent with other professionals edifies all that are in the digital room, and mind-shares and brain-dumps help offer new knowledge or a new spin on the text book knowledge we all learned when attaining our professional sheepskins. Digital platforms are here to stay. They are becoming one of the top networking models for non-local members to share ideas and presentations. I can’t think of our world moving forward with out them."  - Dr. Jerry Dreessen DC CCSP (Mountlake Terrace, WA)

GOING PORTABLE: A TECH MOVEMENT SUPPORTING TREATMENT ENDURANCE

A promising wave in neurostimulation technology is on a fast track to offering a new type of solution to supporting mental health, anxiety control, stress reduction and brain performance optimization.  Pursuing our current trend in personal electronics (of being portable, wearable and wifi-managed), many of these products are achieving a rise in popularity in the consumer market over their predecessors.

PERSONALIZED ACCESS TO HEALTH TECH

The two parts of healthcare are comprised of DIAGNOSTIC and THERAPEUTIC protocols.  Just a short leap in time, while peruising through your neighborhood drug store aisles, you may witness the upgrade (and explosion) in health related products.  The same testing products once accessible only in a doctor's office visit are now consumer versions of medical devices like the blood pressure cuff, the pulse oximeter, rapid (Covid-19) tests and blood test kits- all priced and readily available as off-the-shelf products. A similar evolution is the commercialized Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) home test kits.  These are lab exams that are now available without a prescription or a doctors' note- including: home colon test kits, pharmacogenetic tests to name a few.

The same goes treatment products- where consumer access to so many devices, medications

Enough data and biometrics have been collected on these issues for engineers to build out from (what they may consider) active formulas based on every available scientific and theoretical concept.

Digitizing the process of transcendental meditation, users of these solutions are enjoying the personalized regenerative care through an easy delivery system like a smart phone app.  Since the past decade, developers have carved a major market for this affordably-priced brain-health protocol for consumers and pro-sumers alike. Descriptions for this tech movement range  "digital stress redux", "brain fitness", "meditation on steroids" to "mental optimizer".
